Being at Portland State University allows for students to pursue their interests outside of the fine art context. Taking courses outside of the art department is a requirement for students in the MFA program, and pursuing interdisciplinary studies is supported and encouraged.

The Social Practice area is part of the Master of Fine Art in Contemporary Art Practice that includes both a studio and social practice stream. The Social Practice stream is complimented by a series of contemporary art seminars, professional practices workshops and contemporary art history courses that students take along side the MFA candidates in the studio stream.  Several times throughout the year Studio and Social Practice have group reviews with faculty from both areas.
